the most-talked-about premiere of the fall may be a 34-year-old series. leading up to its season premiere tomorrow, “saturday night live” is earning the kind of buzz that callow shows always do one’s best with a view. it has lodger stars: michael phelps and barack obama. it has a fresh storyline: the republican vice presidential nominee sarah palin. and it has the potentiality of a surprise caller: tina fey is in talks to play ms. palin on the show.

So is Palin “naive” on Pakistan?

In his interview with her, ABC News’ Charlie Gibson pressed Sarah Palin repeatedly on the question of Pakistan and whether the U.S. has the right to make cross-border attacks into that country without its government’s permission. The answer Palin eventually came up with was, admittedly, on message. The only problem? It wasn’t John McCain’s message that Palin was repeating — it was Barack Obama’s.

Obama has previously said that, if necessary, he’d order American forces to attack targets inside Pakistan even without permission. “If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won’t act, we will,” Obama said in a speech last summer.

Obama has been attacked for taking that stance, and for announcing it publicly. (It should be noted that some of those who criticized Obama were his then-rivals for the Democratic nomination, including Joe Biden.)

McCain himself has repeatedly taken after Obama on the issue. Speaking to reporters in February, McCain said, “[T]he best idea is to not broadcast what you’re going to do. That’s naive… You don’t broadcast that you are going to bomb a country that is a sovereign nation and that you are dependent on the good will of the people of that country to help you in the war — in the struggle against Taliban and the sanctuaries which they hold.”

And as recently as this July, McCain had made his position on going after al-Qaida targets in Pakistan — even the biggest target — clear. Asked by CNN’s Larry King, “If you were president and knew that bin Laden was in Pakistan, you know where, would you have U.S. forces go in after him?” McCain responded, “Larry, I’m not going to go there and here’s why, because Pakistan is a sovereign nation.”

That’s not the way Palin sees it, apparently. Gibson asked her the question three times, and she dodged it on the first go-round. But then Gibson asked again, saying, “But governor, I am asking you, do we have the right, in your mind, to go across the border, with or without the approval of the Pakistani government?”

Palin answered, “In order to stop Islamic extremists, those terrorists who would seek to destroy America, and our allies, we must do whatever it takes, and we must not blink, Charlie, in making those tough decisions of where we go, and even who we target.” Asked again, she said, “I believe that America has to exercise all options in order to stop the terrorists who are hell-bent on destroying America, and our allies.”

A McCain spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.

What Brought Kanye West Back To The VMAs?

‘We thought, ‘Let’s give him a call and see if he’s interested’ in closing the show, executive producer Dave Sirulnick says.By Shaheem Reid and Robert Mancini

It’s not easy to cap a night featuring powerhouse performances from Lil Wayne, T.I., Kid Rock and more. So when VMA producers wanted to turn their moment into something truly monumental, they knew who to call to close the show: Mr. Kanye West.

“He’s one of the most pre-eminent hip-hop performers of his time,” said Dave Sirulnick, executive producer of the VMAs. “He makes sure that not only the people in the front row are into his show, but the people in the last row are feeling it as well. Everybody is feeling it the same. He gives that kind of energy. He gives that kind of intensity.”

If awards shows are intended to be the introduction to what’s big and the culmination of everything fly and huge of the past year, it’s tough to argue that West didn’t deserve to be a major player in the 25th VMAs. He was tapped as the MTV News Brain Trust’s Hottest MC in the Game, and his Grammy-nominated third LP, Graduation, was one of the biggest sellers of 2007. Kanye’s Glow in the Dark Tour was not just a highlight of 2008, it was a milestone of his career, proving he can outperform just about anyone in any genre.

“We thought, ‘Let’s see if he wants to take this opportunity,’ ” Sirulnick said.

But while Kanye was clearly the man for the job, it wasn’t always clear if he was willing to take it on. His blowup after last year’s VMAs quickly became the stuff of YouTube legend. Obviously, tempers have since settled down, and his relationship with MTV is back on track. ‘Ye even worked with MTV News to honor young veterans in the “Choose or Lose & Kanye West Present: Homecoming” special.

“We know last year — in hindsight — he wanted to close the show. So we thought, ‘Let’s give him a call and see if he’s interested in doing it,’ ” Sirulnick explained. “He said, ‘Yeah, I am.’ We sat and talked. We spent some time together.”

And so, a larger-than-life, showstopping VMA performance was born, the perfect way for Kanye to premiere a new track.

“The guy’s got one of the most successful tours of the year,” Sirulnick said. “He has one of the most artistic tours of the year. He always brings it. He brings the intensity. He brings a great performance.”
